@ExtinctionR I hope NO ONE will do such things in reality, if anyone didn't get the sarcasm. The facts are hitting ALL OF US. So there's no point in reviving those ideas if these facts will affect us negatively sooner than we have expected.

@ExtinctionR

Call me stunted, but I ALWAYS enjoyed the kid's table better.

The conversation was more intelligent.

@ExtinctionR The ironic thing is I’m the uncle in the family and I’m the radical leftie of the bunch. And the older I get the more radical I get.

@ExtinctionR Serious question: Is there good science behind this advice? I guess effectiveness depends on a lot of things. What if the uncle is leader of a bigger group? I ask because I heard that advice several times in real world and think this can be misleading.

@stayinbed
Not necessarily. I think it's light-hearted advice to make the collapse of society and also Christmas a bit easier to bear.

@ExtinctionR No, always directly confronting your racist uncle, parents, siblings, and other family members is the best way to radicalize the kids because showing them how it's done is far better than the cowardice of avoiding necessary and righteous confrontation.

Teach them directness and honesty, not acquiescence.

Especially if you're white; it's your bare minimum required contribution.

@ricardoharvin @ExtinctionR one approach works for everyone! all family dynamics are the same! everyone can afford to be arrested at a protest!

@ricardoharvin @ExtinctionR For the better part of two decades I've repeatedly debated a certain Fox-News-addicted relative at extended family gatherings, especially over climate science and politics.

It's always felt particularly galling because I have a PhD in a climate-related field, one of a number of PhDs in the extended family, yet this person would never dare suggest the whole basis of their work is a lie. I think everyone else would consider it very odd and quite rude if he did. Yet whenever he picks another climate fight with me, other family members generally roll their eyes, try to change the topic, or walk away. It's been frustrating and a bit isolating tbh.

Today, I found myself sharing a quiet moment with him as we both sought some respite from the heat and humidity in a cooler part of the house. I was bracing myself for another debate. Instead, he started talking about how "with global warming they're telling us to set up a cool room for surviving heatwaves" and then proceeded to talk me through his thinking and the steps he's taken towards doing so.

Honestly, it felt like some kind of small victory. Or at least one of the first encouraging signs of change after decades of what had felt like futile relational labour.

@EndemicEarthling @ExtinctionR Doing the hard work is hard, and often unrewarding.

One may not have any effect on a particular person, but being consistent and clear can sometimes teach younger people and sway adults.

The key is to never quit. Rest, yes. Literally engage in every discussion, no. Consistently and openly challenging when and where one can is vital.

@ricardoharvin
Today I helped my 8 year old girl message her grandmother to say she didn't appreciate a dress and pink gifts in a polite way.

You're right. ❤️‍🔥
